Among the sages of yore, Rishi Markandey stands distinguished as the only one with a Purana named after him. He is also unique for his life story: being ill-fated to die at age sixteen, he attained immortality through penance, deflecting the messengers of death. He is venerated across Vaishnavism, Shaivism, Devi cults, and ascetic traditions from the Himalayas to South India.

Rishi Markandey is counted among the seven Chiranjeevis (immortals)—alongside Ashwatthama, Hanuman, Kripacharya, Ved Vyas, Parashuram, and Vibhishana. The birth place of Rishi Markandey is located at Markand Makri village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh (Bilaspur being a distortion of Byas-pur, after Rishi Ved Vyas). Markand Makri features five distinct natural water springs or kunds:
